Amanda can only watch helplessly as her mother loses the ability to make informed decisions in her own best interests and to judge the actions of those closest to her. This thought-provoking drama explores the question of who should make decisions on behalf of a person living with dementia. Amanda, a recently divorced academic, has taken a sabbatical to spend more time with her teenage daughter and her mother, who is living with dementia. Although Leslie is gradually losing touch with reality, her partner, Martin, appears to be taking good care of her. Amanda believes this too - until one day she walks in on them having sex. Convinced that her mother has lost the capacity to decide what is best for her and suspecting abuse, she reports the incident to the police. This sets in motion a complex process involving social services and inevitably strains Amanda's relationship with her stepfather. In cases of dementia, can a sexual relationship truly be considered consensual? And if so, who should decide - a spouse, a child or an institution?
"The ethical dilemma at the centre of the story was what captivated me. I found myself thinking about the daughter. Any choice she makes will harm someone. If she stops it, she may hurt her father. If she allows it, she may be allowing harm to her mother. Dementia happens gradually, like the metaphor of boiling a frog. The husband may not even realise how much his wife has declined. He may truly believe she is still capable of consent." (Lance Hammer)
