A harrowing look behind the scenes of the tragedy at Brussels' Heysel Stadium during the 1985 European Cup Final, raising questions of personal and collective responsibility. Thirty-year-old Marie, the daughter and press attaché of the Mayor of Brussels, attends the European Cup Final between Juventus and Liverpool FC with her parents. Also at the match is Luca Rossi, a journalist covering the event for Italian television, accompanied by family members who have travelled from Italy. Before kick-off, hooligans go on a rampage, leaving dozens dead. Part of the blame lies with the poor coordination between the various branches of the police and the security services. As those in charge, overwhelmed by confusion and political pressure, waver between cancelling the match and allowing it to continue - fearing that abandoning it would provoke even greater unrest - individuals on the ground do their utmost to help the injured and terrified.
"There is a historical dimension, of course, but it is also strikingly contemporary in its themes /…/. When I watch the news today, and see how the ruling classes behave, I feel very worried, and I see many echoes of it in the film. /…/ I'm fully aware that certain aspects of the film may seem grotesque. But when I look at real people in the real world today, I sometimes wonder whether they themselves are caricatures!" (Teodora Ana Mihai)
