In this absurd comedy, an ageing Egyptian's attempt to repair his fridge spirals into a confrontation with bureaucracy, traditional notions of masculinity, marriage and the quiet terror of growing old. Magdy and Sama, a retired couple in their sixties, live a quiet life in their Cairo apartment. Their routine is disrupted when their fridge breaks down. What should be a simple repair escalates into a bizarre, months-long battle with a shady maintenance company. As the fridge remains unfixed, so too does everything else, forcing them to confront not only the cracks in the system but also those in their own sense of purpose.
"That story with the fridge actually happened to me, but it was only a trigger. What I really wanted to talk about was something we live with every day, named with a word that has no real translation in English or any other language. "Al-qahr" is not just frustration. It's not only about being angry or tired. It's the feeling of not getting your rights, of being slowly broken down, of knowing you're right but still powerless. It's frustration, despair, and injustice all together." (Yasser Shafiey)
