I soliti ignoti
Običajni osumljenci
Mario Monicelli · Italy, 1958 · 106 min
A landmark commedia all'italiana comedy about a group of clumsy thieves whose plan for the perfect heist turns into a series of comical mishaps. When petty thief Cosimo gets hold of a plan for what appears to be a simple pawnshop robbery, his accomplices put together an improvised gang and seek advice from experienced safecracker Dante Cruciani. After careful preparations, they set out to pull off the job but soon discover that they are ill-equipped for a heist of such complexity. Monicelli sets his parody of the classic heist film in Rome on the threshold of modernisation, turning the petty thieves' failed undertaking into a witty comedy about people left behind by the economic boom.
"Mario Monicelli's Big Deal on Madonna Street is that genuine rarity in popular culture: a satire that not only helped kill off one movie genre but started a whole new subgenre in the process. The film, released in Italy in 1958 as I Soliti ignoti, was a veritable treasure trove of cinematic influences, from Italian neorealism to Hollywood postwar film noir and its 1950s French cousin, all tied together."
