Divorzio all'italiana
Ločitev po italijansko
Pietro Germi · Italy, 1961 · 104 min
This Italian classic uses humour to expose traditional Sicilian society's perceptions of honour, marriage and masculinity. Sicilian baron Ferdinando Cefal? falls in love with his young cousin Angela, but his wife Rosalia stands in the way of their marriage. Since divorce is illegal in Catholic Italy, Ferdinando begins looking for a way to make his wife unfaithful so that he can kill her and receive a lighter sentence under Italy's laws governing crimes of honour. This absurd plan becomes a sharply satirical comedy about Sicilian social conventions, patriarchal morality and institutional hypocrisy.
"My position was absolutely in favour of divorce. My aim was to suggest to the viewer that in Italy it was time to establish divorce. I set out to make a satirical-grotesque film, with all the exaggerations appropriate to its character. But my ultimate aim came through nevertheless: in fact, today, whenever the film is discussed, people talk about divorce." (Pietro Germi)
