Il vedovo
Vdovec
Dino Risi · Italy, 1959 · 100 min
A biting comedy about greed and ruthless opportunism during Italy's economic boom. Milanese industrialist Alberto Nardi is accustomed to living beyond his means, relying on the wealth of his affluent wife, Elvira. But when Elvira announces that she will no longer support him financially, Alberto quickly finds himself on the brink of bankruptcy and begins to contemplate a solution. When he learns that his wife is believed to have died in a train accident, he immediately sees an opportunity to inherit her fortune. But as preparations for the funeral get underway, things take an unexpected turn.
"A new and old Italy, class-conscious and unpleasant, entirely caught up in money, made up of dark and destructive human relationships: the social monstrosity that Italian comedy would portray so well in the following decade. The Widower makes people laugh, but it draws its strength from a heightened nastiness, something almost unprecedented at the end of the 1950s. It was precisely Dino Risi who, throughout the 1960s, would accustom Italian audiences to this acidic and aggressive kind of comedy." (Massimiliano Schiavoni, Quinlan)
