Il federale
Federalist
Luciano Salce · Italy, France, 1961 · 102 min
A comedy about Italian Fascism, political extremism and the clash between opposing ideologies. In 1944, Primo Arcovazzi is tasked with bringing Professor Erminio Bonafé, a prominent anti-Fascist philosopher, from Abruzzo to Rome. Arcovazzi sees the arrest as an opportunity to earn a promotion to the rank of federale, but as they travel through war-torn Italy, their relationship gradually changes. Their journey to Rome becomes a satirical and surprisingly human exploration of Fascism and the absurdity of ideological blindness.
"The Fascist in Il federale is the product of a school of stupidity and obtuseness, manipulated by his own shrewd superiors. He is someone who does not understand because he has been taught not to understand. On the other hand, the professor, with his firm and clear anti-Fascism, has human limitations that his antagonist does not. The whole film is built around this clash of characters." (Luciano Salce)
