Le journal d'une femme de chambre
Dnevnik sobarice
Luis Bunuel · France, Italy, 1964 · 97 min
A classic screen adaptation of Octave Mirbeau's novel, directed by master filmmaker Luis Bunuel and starring Jeanne Moreau in the lead role. Céléstine is a Parisian working as a maid at the Monteil family's country estate. The family consists of Mr Rabour, who has a fetish for women's shoes, his frigid daughter and her sexually frustrated, maid-chasing husband. Céléstine has to learn to cope with her new surroundings. There is much talk on the estate about how everything must be kept spotless, but this very insistence suggests that the family members are hiding some sordid secrets. The new maid is not at all surprised, knowing full well that she has been hired to satisfy their desires.
"The film ends not with justice triumphant but with the stinging irony of a nation marching through the streets toward right-wing brutality and leisurely fascism. Bunuel blends the humorous and the grotesque in a cutting satire that may strike viewers today as slow and melodramatic, but it is elegantly crafted, written, and acted - and demonstrably still au courant."
