L'uomo dei cinque palloni
Človek s petimi baloni
Marco Ferreri · Italy, France, 1965 · 85 min
An absurdist comedy dissecting consumerism, humanity's need for control and the futility of seeking rational answers to life's unpredictability. Milanese industrialist Mario Fuggetta becomes preoccupied with an apparently simple question prompted by his company's advertising campaign: how far can a balloon be inflated before it bursts? What begins as innocent curiosity gradually develops into an obsession that takes over his life and his relationship with his fiancée, Giovanna. What starts as an absurd game becomes a parable about alienation and the obsessive human desire to measure, control and exploit everything to its absolute limit.
"It is a paradoxical story, but reality is often paradoxical too. I think the balloon is a very simple metaphor: the more you inflate it, the more fragile it becomes. And this is also the condition of modern man, who keeps growing, consuming and producing without knowing where his limit lies." (Marco Ferreri)
