Mario Monicelli · Italy, 1974 · 106 min
A satirical comedy about marriage, jealousy and the complexities of gender relations. Giulio Basletti, a Milanese worker and trade unionist, marries the young Vincenzina, whom he met in southern Italy. But when Vincenzina grows close to a young policeman, Giovanni, their marriage falls into crisis, forcing Giulio to confront his own jealousy and his self-image as a modern man. Monicelli turns the marital conflict into a witty and at times bitter story about working-class life, relations between the sexes and an Italy undergoing profound social change.
"With Come Home and Meet My Wife I had many satisfactions, because in all the discussions held about the film, in Milan and Turin, people always said: 'Finally Italian cinema shows a worker as he really is, with his funny sides, with warmth: workers who fall in love, who argue, who also have their own problems to solve at the trade-union level.'"
