Stephan Komandarev · Bulgaria, Czech Rep., Germany, 2025 · 102 min
Komandarev returns with a socially engaged reflection on the brutality of late capitalism - another gripping, timely and uncompromising portrait of the exploited, made in the heart of the European Union. Iva works in a clothing factory in rural Bulgaria. It is early 2020, and news reports describe a mysterious virus spreading across the world. When Iva develops a fever, she is denied sick leave and ordered to continue working in the factory's cramped, overcrowded conditions to keep up with demand. She eventually tests positive for COVID-19, and the virus soon spreads throughout the community. When news emerges that Iva may have been the town's 'patient zero', everyone turns against her - the factory owners, her co-workers and even her own son.
"This story was inspired by true events. Made in EU is a film about exploitation within the textile industry - an issue that reaches far beyond the borders of the 'third' and 'civilised' worlds. This is a global story set in a local, intimate and specific setting: one of the poorest regions in Europe, the Bulgarian provinces." (Stephan Komandarev)
