An adaptation of the 1969 film The Unfaithful Wife (La Femme infidele) by French director Claude Chabrol, set in present-day Russia, where everyone is expected to do their bit for the war effort in Ukraine. Russia, 2022. A married couple, Gleb and Galina, live in a town far from Moscow, where the letter Z is visible on car windshields and on tanks being transported to the front. Their relationship is far from perfect, with both suspecting the other of infidelity. However, Gleb has more pressing worries. He and other local business leaders are summoned to a meeting with the mayor and informed that Moscow needs to draft more men for the war. Each company will therefore be required to provide the names of men deemed expendable who can be mobilised. Gleb faces a dilemma: eager to avoid sacrificing his employees while also protecting his business, he comes up with a plan to satisfy Moscow's demands, even if it means further undermining an already fragile moral framework.
"I just make films. I'm a Russian director living outside my own country. But even from here, I cannot help but speak out about what is now on everyone's mind, about what is occupying the thoughts and emotions of Russians today." (Andrey Zvyagintsev)
