Soumsoum, la nuit des astres
Soumsoum, noč zvezd
Mahamat-Saleh Haroun · Chad, France, 2026 · 101 min
A story about the ancient animist cosmology of interconnected souls, spirits and celestial memory among the people of the Ennedi Massif, situated in the heart of the Sahara Desert in north-eastern Chad. Seventeen-year-old Kellou has been granted supernatural powers she cannot understand. Troubled and hesitant about how to manage such an unsettling gift, she is filled with uncertainty until her path crosses that of Aya, a woman in her forties. Their encounter intertwines their individual destinies. Aya already knows that Kellou possesses a special power. She also knows that Kellou's mother died in childbirth: Aya was there to assist with the birth and thus heard the dying woman's final words. As her own time draws to a close, Aya - who fears the disappearance of the mystical, pantheistic world she and Kellou share - entrusts the younger woman with keeping this world alive.
"When I was a child, there were people who were said to become animals during the night. They became foxes, hyenas, lions. All that was so exciting to me. There are a lot of stories and legends about the Ennedi Desert. I saw that landscape and then I started writing the story. In this part of Chad, they discovered the fossilized remains of the first human being on Earth. I think the whole human race belongs to this place. All of us are migrants - we moved from there. I wanted to create a kind of mythology about this place and this story, which is a tale of the beginning of our world. It is a Biblical story. It belongs to the beginnings of humanity."
