La chute de la maison Usher
Propad hiše Usher
Jean Epstein · France, 1928 · 72 min
Infused with expressionism, this Gothic thriller about death, obsession and the destructive power of art employs bold visual experiments to blur the boundaries between reality and illusion, life and death. Sir Roderick Usher lives in a secluded manor with his ailing wife, Madeline, obsessively painting her portrait. With every stroke of the brush, the portrait seems to come more vividly to life, while Madeline's vitality is slowly ebbing away. When she collapses one day and is declared dead, Roderick, although convinced that she is still alive, allows her to be laid to rest in the family crypt. During a stormy night, his forebodings come true: Madeline returns from the grave, and the House of Usher meets its downfall.
"When Madeleine and Roderick feel death approaching in the The Fall of the House of Usher, it's similar to the feeling that we have when death takes possession of us. So Roderick listens for sounds from the coffin like we listen at the door of the room to hear if a tired nocturnal ghost will perhaps awaken." (Jean Epstein)
