Just before the Chilean coup d'état, two CIA agents take a short break on Easter Island. A comedy thriller blending elements of espionage, dark humour and a hefty dose of eccentricity. Chris and Lee are a pair of trained assassins, eccentric CIA operatives stationed in Santiago, Chile, in 1973 and preparing for an important covert operation to assassinate Chilean President Salvador Allende. But just before the mission, Chris decides to make a getaway to Easter Island. There, too, the two longtime collaborators are confronted with disagreements they have already mulled over countless times - and, of course, the paranoia that is an integral part of their profession. And as if their relationship weren't already a recipe for trouble, Chris lets slip sensitive information about their mission (and other hush-hush operations) to two rebellious Chilean students they meet along the way.
"I didn't intend for the film to be a commentary on contemporary geopolitics, but the project seems to have taken on a more timely resonance in the wake of the United States' military action in Venezuela and the kidnapping of the country's president Nicolás Maduro. I was struck by the differences between the era I depicted as much as the similarities with the current U.S. government. One of the frightening things is that they don't seem to be making it covert anymore, which is very strange. Like in the '70s, at least these horrible people had the intelligence to keep their acts secret, but it just feels like things are getting stupider and stupider." (Martin McDonagh)
