Claude Chabrol · France, Italy, 1969 · 98 min
This psychological thriller about the chain of events that unfolds after a husband discovers his wife's affair was the inspiration for Andrei Zvyagintsev's Minotaur. Insurance broker Charles Desvallées lives in a beautiful house in the countryside near Paris with his wife, Hélene, and their young son, Michel. Hélene often goes to Paris, allegedly to shop and see a film. One day, Charles discovers that Hélene was not at the hairdresser's as she had claimed. He gradually grows more suspicious of how his wife spends her time and hires a private investigator to follow her, eventually having a quiet word with her lover, the writer Victor Pégal.
"Writer-director Claude Chabrol's eerie 1969 masterpiece of frozen emotions and unspoken truths... It is a film of icy fascination." (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian)
