Papirnati tiger
James Gray · USA, Brasil, Italy, 2026 · 115 min
Two brothers find themselves up against the Russian criminal underworld while pursuing the American dream in New York City. The Pearl family lives an ordinary, peaceful life in Queens in the 1980s. Gary, the older of the two brothers, is a former police officer who one day suggests that his younger brother, Irwin, an engineer, join him in a potentially lucrative business venture. With an influx of foreign companies bringing new opportunities to the port, the brothers could put their knowledge of the local area to use helping these businesses navigate American regulations. Irwin eagerly seizes the opportunity and wants to get the foreign company ready for inspection right away. But when he goes to inspect the premises one night, he discovers that the company is merely a front for illicit criminal activities. The brothers immediately incur the wrath of the Russian mob.
"The American dream is both a mirage and an ambition. Through the prism of the brothers, Gary and Irwin, and the character of Hester, I wanted to explore three types of obstacles to this phenomenon. First of all, we sometimes believe we are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed, but we aren't always smart or resourceful enough to pull it off. Second, even if we are smart, we aren't necessarily willing to make the necessary compromises to reach our goal because we don't want to carry the weight of guilt on our conscience afterward. Finally, no matter how genuinely motivated we may be to achieve our dream, sometimes the gods decide otherwise." (James Gray)
