A film about a pivotal period in the history of the British media, when Rupert Murdoch, through the newspaper The Sun, pioneered a new way of reaching and engaging audiences. London, 1969. Australian businessman Rupert Murdoch wants to enter the British media market and is looking for investment opportunities. His plan is to take over The Sun, an unsuccessful and dull newspaper on the verge of collapse. Murdoch is aware that readers' preferences in Britain are firmly entrenched along political and class lines but nevertheless sees an opportunity for an entirely new concept. To make his plan a reality, he brings in Larry Lamb, the charismatic editor of the Daily Mail. Each brings their own personal baggage and insecurities to the new venture, and it is precisely for this reason that they are even more determined to make The Sun the new star of the British media scene.
"1969: the year we first walked on the moon, and the year Rupert Murdoch and Larry Lamb launched a newspaper that was to change the world far more. Long before Fox News, clickbait, and Truth Social; decades before Twitter, Facebook, Google and OnlyFans, these two men created a new tabloid that, against all the odds, became the biggest-selling newspaper in the world. Cheeky, irreverent, daring: the "super soaraway" Sun challenged the establishment and remade our world for the modern era." (Danny Boyle)
