A deeply personal story of impossible love in impossible times, underscored by music. Winner of five European Film Awards and Cannes 2018 Best Director Award. Wiktor and Zula meet in 1949 amid the ruins of post-war Poland. He is a classically trained musician travelling the countryside in search of candidates for a state-sponsored folk ensemble; she is a young singer who captivates him with her temperament and fiercely independent spirit. Though they seem destined to remain apart, they cannot live without each other. We follow their turbulent romance from Poland to East Berlin, Yugoslavia and the Parisian jazz clubs of the 1950s. The film is dedicated to the director's parents and inspired by their life story.
"I hate biopics, you can't tell a story of a life. And trying to impose a kind of cause and effect logic on it usually leads to very cheesy scenes and cheesy dialogue, and very reductive interpretations. So for a long time I was looking at how to do it, and I arrived at this elliptic way of doing it, but then I needed something like music to hold it all together. So the music became like the third character, the third element that kept it all together and helped to identify the changing relationship, times and places." (Paweł Pawlikowski)
