La femme du 5eme
Ženska iz petega okrožja
Paweł Pawlikowski · France, Poland, UK, 2011 · 84 min
An American writer, reeling from a personal breakdown, meets a widow potentially linked to a series of murders. Set in a dark and unsettling Paris, this screen adaptation of Douglas Kennedy's novel explores guilt, desire and the possibility of a new beginning. Tom Ricks, once a successful American writer, flees to Paris after a scandal costs him his job, hoping to be closer to his daughter. He settles in a cheap hotel and takes a job as a night watchman, then becomes involved with a mysterious widow, Margit. Soon, he begins to lose his sense of time and reality, and the boundary between reality and his imagination becomes increasingly blurred.
"I never really thought of it as an adaptation, more like a good starting point for a film that would have its own internal logic. If you look at it in a certain way the story could be a record of psychological disintegration: the story of a man who falls apart, becomes schizophrenic." (Paweł Pawlikowski)
