After immigrating to England, a young Russian woman and her son get stranded in a deserted resort while they wait for their asylum approval. Tanya arrives in England from Moscow with her ten-year-old son, where her English fiancé is supposed to meet her. When he fails to show up at the airport, Tanya applies for political asylum for fear of deportation and ends up with her son in a deserted seaside resort. While looking for ways to survive in her new surroundings, she meets Alfie, the manager of a local amusement arcade, and the two gradually form a closer bond, leaving Tanya faced with a dilemma - whether to stay or withdraw her asylum claim and return home.
"I've always liked films where humans are at odds with the system, ordinary people who have some anarchy or poetry about them. I'm interested in characters trapped in a particular environment - characters with an intriguing dynamic that splits between their intellect and their emotions." (Paweł Pawlikowski)
