Dino Risi · Italy, France, 1963 · 120 min
Spanning twenty vignettes, this satirical comedy is an unrelenting attack on human weakness and the darker side of Italian society during the economic boom. Ugo Tognazzi and Vittorio Gassman portray a wide range of human types in a series of short, often absurd and satirical episodes - from aristocrats and businessmen to athletes, intellectuals and ordinary citizens. With his characteristic cynicism, Dino Risi spares no one: the rich and the poor, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, the educated and the uneducated. All are willing to sell their values for money, success, power or social status, transforming them into the "monsters" of a new Italy shaped by the rapid economic growth of the late 1950s.
"The film is a prodigy of compactness and narrative happiness, a paragon of incisiveness and representation of contemporary life under the banner of the most scathing criticism, the most biting satire. Risi unleashes the sharp claws of his 'cynicism', which is only the cynicism of those who use their eyes to look and see, and do not cover them with the veil of censorship or ideological good intentions. The cynicism of truth, which has no regard for anyone." (Paolo D'Agostini, Cineteca di Bologna)
