Jegyzeteim a Marsról
Moji zapiski o Marsu
Lili Horvát · Hungary, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2026 · 106 min
A speculative fiction film revolving around a puzzle uses the missing-person narrative to construct a metaphor for personal trauma and marital alienation. Brilliant American astrophysicist Margot relocates to the Hungarian countryside with her husband, Sam, to recover from a personal breakdown. She goes missing during a challenging hike in the mountains that Sam pressured her to undertake, leading her to be presumed dead. Weeks later, Margot mysteriously reappears, unharmed, on the exact day of her own memorial service. While she looks the same, she is profoundly changed and has no memory of Sam or their life together. Instead, she is driven by an intense, single-minded determination to find and destroy her research notebook on Mars's potential for human habitation.
"Our story argues for great love, yet it shows the eternal limits of knowing the person we are in love with. It's a bit like looking at Mars from Earth. From our earthly point of view, Mars was once exciting and ever distant, the red planet we lusted after. But now our view has changed. It is a place for us we could actually live, a terrain to be conquered. Subsequently, a terrain to be respected and protected. This is the case with love too: the way we love another tells as much about us as about them." (Lili Horvat)
